The father of one of my sixth grade students passed away on Sunday, 16 December 2012. My student is the middle of five children. The family is unable to pay for the funeral services and associated costs, and so my brilliant, generous, and compassionate sixth graders have organized a fundraiser for the family. We just finished reading the non-fiction story Sadako and the Thousand Cranes by Eleanor Coerr, and we used the story as the jumping off point for our fundraiser. In the novel, the lively and athletic Sadako Sasaki, the star of her school's running team, begins having dizzy spells. She soon falls gravely ill with leukemia, an aftereffect of the atom bomb that fell on her city, Hiroshima, when she was only a baby. Sadako approaches her illness the way she did her running, with irrepressible spirit, determination, and confidence. Recalling a Japanese legend, Sadako sets to work folding paper cranes. For the legend holds that if a sick person folds 1,000 paper cranes, the gods will grant her wish and make her healthy again. My students and I have committed to folding 1,000 origami paper cranes in honor of our classmate’s father. The cranes will hang in our classroom all year long. We are asking that anyone who can, sponsor the folding of a crane with a donation of any size, $1, $5, $10, $20, or more. Please consider helping the family of our classmate and friend.
