Finn Dodgson hasn't added a story.
Since I was about 3.5 years old, I have been on skis. I went through the Jackrabbit program and was a part of the Junior Devo Team at Hardwood Ski & Bike. It was there that I developed a passion for racing, being a part of a team, and striving for my own goals. Having raced through high school and university, I am now a member of the National Team Development Centre in Thunder Bay with the goal of making it onto the Canadian National Ski Team (NST).
As a niche amateur sport, the amount of funding and support available for XC ski racing is limited. Most of the existing funding is directed towards the NST, meaning aspiring NST members must cover their own costs. To qualify for international race trips and be nominated to the NST, athletes must compete on the Canada Cup circuit. Athletes such as myself attending these races, as well as training camps (in the dryland season), incur large costs related to travel, accommodation, equipment, and more.
In that vein, reaching that level of competition is not possible for me without external support. As this is my first year on an elite-level training centre, I am still learning how to fundraise and support myself. I have been working hard holding two jobs during the summer and fall, but now need to focus on training and race preparation. If you are interested in supporting a Canadian athlete this Giving Tuesday (or after), please consider contributing to my fundraising page. The money raised will go towards offsetting my travel and competition costs for this season. My total budget for the year is about $40k, with $20k of that attributed to skiing including travel costs, waxing/coaching fees, equipment, race entries, and more. Every contribution makes a difference and further enables me to chase my dream-- to represent Canada on the world stage.
