I am asking for help from the community to purchase a stander and a proper supporting wheelchair for my daughter, Chiara.

Chiara has been immobile and non verbal for several years now. She spends her day at home and is picked up and carried from bed to wheel chair. After so many years of immobility her body has become very stiff and requires constant physiotherapy and movement.

Chiara fell ill in the fall of 2007. She was a beautiful healthy teen who slowly became incapacitated in front of our eyes. To this day we do not have a definitive diagnosis of her condition.

When I look at Chiara I see a frail innocent 22 year old child. I feed her and take care of her as best as I can even though I am burnt out as a caregiver and emotionally drained as a mother.  There is a constant sadness in my heart that never goes away and a constant query in my mind that never subsides.

I choose to have my daughter cared for at home. She is the world to me and I love her immensely. I have relentlessly endeavored to find a possible answer, solution to regain her health. I struggle with the uncertainty and the lack of support available to an individual in her condition.

Chiara’s prolonged immobility has resulted in contractures as well as digestion and circulatory system challenges.

The stander will allow her to extend her hips and knees, and bear weight to hold the body upright against gravity. This will help her to feel the necessary gravity to help her body function better.

The wheelchair we require is one that more fully supports her head and back. Our current chair is an older model and is not supporting her as much as we’d like as her needs have changed.

We appreciate any support.
