Iloilo's cat population is quite large, but there is very little in the way of programs to help prevent the spread of disease and treat potential medical issues with rescues.

As cat lovers, my wife and I are more than happy to provide for our own (now six) cats, as well as more than a dozen local strays who frequent our house and yard knowing there's always food and shelter available.

Sadly, this is not the case for most rescues here in the Philippines; the shelters are horribly underfunded and understaffed.  They are unable to provide even a simple $1 de-worming tablet or a basic health checkup before delivering animals to adoptive parents, and trap-neuter-return programs are non-existent here.

Case in point:  we adopted a cat (Aurora/"Rori") in January at the behest of a local rescue agency (AWA).  Due to funding constraints, the rescue agency could provide no medical history, no immunizations or de-worming -- and unknown to us all, she was pregnant at the time.  The resulting medical costs, while minimal for us as Americans (C-section to remove 3 stillborn kittens, treatment for peritonitis, and spay), are beyond the financial reach of the volunteers staffing the agency and the condition was undiagnosed due to the lack of funding to provide even a basic physical exam that would have revealed her pregnancy.

In the interest of the well-being of local rescues such as Rori, we are establishing an endowment to help cover the costs of providing basic veterinary care to these rescued animals.

Our goal is $1000; this will go a long way toward providing these basic services.

Please help these animals, they deserve a fair chance at life.
