Since becoming a part of the East Coast Cichlids community, I have been the butt of many jokes for my taste in fish, taste in music, and of course, my ever-changing facial hair and hairstyles. The assault on my hair has often been lead by Mike Meistrich. If we can raise at least $1000 for the Stuart M Grant Cichlid Conservation Fund, I will let Mike Meistrich dictate how my hair and facial hair should be cut and styled (eyebrows are off limits!) during the East Coast Monster Fish Konvention in August.

Founded in 2007 by Ad Konings and Jay Stauffer, the fund was named after Stuart Grant, who was a pioneer in the export of cichlids from Lake Malawi. One of the main goals of the fund is to produce and place ANDs (anti-netting devices) throughout Malawi National Park. The park is a protected area, and it is illegal to use beach seines and gill nets within. These nets capture fish of all sizes, including fry before they've had a chance to grow and breed. The ANDs snag and tear these nets, discouraging their use in park waters. While helping the fish populations, this also leads to sustainable fishing practices that ensure this food source remains for future generations.
