Three months ago Rotchana Larbja Learn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Agranulocytosis and Septicemia. A bone marrow transplant is needed to offer her and her family any hope of her long term survival.
Rotchana has lived and worked for three years at the Prem Tinsulanonda International School as a housekeeper in Mae Rim, Thailand.
Rotchana is a simple laborer and makes the equivelent of USD 160 per month. As a Thai resident she qualifies for government medical assistance which to date has covered all her hospital, medical and perscription bills.
She is now undergoing chemotherapy and unable to work. Her work compensation is only one month per annum leaving her with no day to day income until she is well enough to return to work. Her husband is also a laborer and they have his small salary to provide food and shelter in a one room dwelling that homes the couple and their 9 year old daughter, Patchalida.
Rotchana has just received her 2nd Chemo treatment and will undergo her 3rd treatment and spinal tap on 4 February 2014. The 4th chemo treatment is scheduled for March 2014.
In February 2014 her Oncologist would like her family members to undergo a spinal tap to find a match for a future bone marrow transplant. This transplant can take place after the 4th chemo treatment. Khun Rotchana has three brothers that are eligible for this screening.
All three siblings are also day laboreres and do not live in the Chiang Mai, Thailand Provence. They will need to travel from Northeast Thailand (Isaan) to undergo the screening.
The cost per person for the screening is 8,000 baht per person (Approx. USD270/per person). This is the only procedure that is not covered by the government insurance. All her current and post treatment, including the bone marrow transplant will be covered. This life-saving transplant is the only future procedure that can increase a leukemia patients recovery and survival.
The other costs raised will go towards transportation to have the family members travel to Chiang Mai.
The Prem Tinsulanonda International School is an international community made up of staff from around the globe working alongside their Thai national collegues.
Rotchana is a loving, warm and hard working woman, much liked by the people she has worked alongside. We all empathize with her struggle and fears for her daughter's future. Please help us by donating any amount to make this life-saving transplant a reality and a gift of hope for Rotchana and her family.
