Hello, my name is Chelsea.

Choosing a career is one of the hardest decisions to make. I am no exception to that. However, as a young girl, I said I wanted to grow up to be a veterinarian. As an adult, I decided to revisit my childhood dream and I began working as a veterinary technician at a small animal clinic and as a volunteer veterinary technician at the Georgia Aquarium. As I worked with passionate veterinarians and veterinary professionals who taught me the best care for cats, dogs, guinea pigs, beluga whales, penguins, and fish, I had an epiphany. An occupation should be doing something you love: a calling. For me, becoming a veterinarian is my calling.

So, in January of last year (2013) I began my application to St. George’s University Veterinary School (SGU) in the Caribbean island of Grenada. In November of 2013, I found out that I was accepted into the August 2014 class!

My future goals are to become a DVM with a master’s degree in marine medicine to serve and protect animals around the world. I would like to start up research facilities and rehabilitation centers to attend to the needs of marine animals. Although I want to primarily work with marine animals, working with small animals inspired me to help society with my future veterinary degree by providing care to families in financial need.  I would like to work in my community with other veterinarians and animal health care individuals to provide services to animals for minimal payment. I believe that all animals deserve the opportunity for a healthy life. Ultimately, I want to use the education I gain at St. George’s University to serve any animal that is in need. My career aspirations may not seem very easy and require commitment to see them through, but I am a dedicated person. Anyone who knows me knows that once I start something, I see it through.

As excited as I am to begin working to achieve my dream of helping animals, I am concerned that I financially will not be able to. SGU is one of the less expensive veterinary institutions, but the debt I am looking at coming out of school with is more than $200,000.

Today, I am asking you to help me pay my first year deposit of $3,000. After this deposit, I will qualify for financial aid, but right now this cost is out of pocket and due in June. I am working full time and trying to save as much money as possible, but I don’t think I will be able to save enough money in time for the deadline.

I would really appreciate any help you could give me. I promise to use your assistance to better the lives of animals everywhere. And I’ll owe you some veterinary care once I am graduated. ;)

Thank you so much for your support!

Much love and thanks,

Chelsea Hester (future Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)
