Simon Fraser Elementary is a wheelchair accessible school...except for the most important area - the playground. Sidney and Josh are two of our students who use mobility aides and more than anything they would love to be able to chase their friends around on the playground. The problem is the woodchips get stuck in their wheels. Our hope is to resurface the playground, allowing Sid and Josh to use it!

This is coming at a cost...$150,000...we've raised $48,000...

Simon Fraser Elementary was designed as an “accessible school” but the accessibility did not carry on outside to the playground. Our goal is to make Fraser fully accessible, especially where it counts...in PLAY. Sidney and Josh are included fully by their fellow students but would feel 100% of the benefit of Fraser if they could access the school playground. With the existing bark mulch surface, it’s impossible, so it is our hope to replace it with a pour-in rubber surface. This will allow all of our children to play at par.

We at SFE are aware of the financial state of the Vancouver School Board and are willing to work hard towards making our playground accessible. We will continue to write letters to our local MLA and to the city leaders but are also realistic with the amount of help we should expect from the Province and the City of Vancouver. We want to be able to give our children with special needs the opportunity to engage in all aspects of school life...especially in PLAY. With some time, and with your help, we WILL make Simon Fraser Elementary fully inclusive.
The VSB says, “It is our collective responsibility as a school district to ensure the highest quality learning experiences for all students, with a focus on student engagement, learning and development in a safe, inclusive environment.”
We couldn’t agree more...
