Kim Falconer hasn't added a story.
On December 13, 2015, Yellowknife-born and raised Napu Boychuk was caught in a strong undertow current at the Varadero beach in Cuba. He drowned and was resuscitated after the accident which left a lot of sea water and sand in his lungs and stomach. Napu remains in Havana’s Cira Garcia hospital intensive care unit. Within 48 hours of the accident, he had a surgical implant to align vertebrae 5 and 6.
The operation went extremely well but Napu has not recovered use of his legs or arms. He is receiving tremendous care from the doctors, nurses and physiotherapists. Napu's emergency travel insurance was cut off on January 7, 2016 based on the claim from the insurance company that there is no longer an emergency so all further expenses are currently out-of-pocket for his family who are at his side.
Napu's sister Tuutalik was a classmate of mine/ours for as long as I can remember, from JH Sissons through to William McDonald (William Mac) and Sir John Franklin. Tuutalik was a part of our tight-knit French Immersion class. At the time, Napu was a young, shy Inuk boy, 11 years our junior with the same bright, broad beautiful smile. A quarter century later, he is a talented dancer in his final year of a Bachelor of Fine Arts at Ryerson's Theatre School in Toronto.
Growing up in Yellowknife, Napu was always at his older sister Tuutalik's side and it goes without saying that Tutie and her father would be at his bedside to ensure he has the best recovery possible.Tuut and her father have been accessing limited internet via the Canadian Embassy in Cuba. Today (Jan 16) she wrote:
"I'm touched deeply that Napu is so well loved. He continues to remain positive and optimistic. The doctors cannot say whether he will recover completely because each spinal cord injury is unique. But they also say he is recovering well because he is only 29, physically fit, healthy and most importantly: good-natured, positive and optimistic."
Please help Tuutalik and her father with the costs associated with Napu's care as he strives to regain the use of his arms and legs. Could you also share this message with other Northerners who may know Napu, Tuutalik or Dan Boychuk? All funds raised will be provided to the Boychuk family to assist with out-of-pocket expenses. As you likely know, ICU stays are among the costliest of all hospital stays.
Thank you in advance for your contribution and healing thoughts for Napu, Tuut and Dan.
