Hello Everyone, I have made this fundraiser to ask for help for my mother. My mom's name is Wyona Sheppard. She was diagnosed with a form of Melenoma Cancer called Choroidal Melenoma on the back of her right Eye.
My mom had went to see her eye doctor in 2009. The eye physician at that time found a spot on the back of eye and informed her of it. At that time it was just a freckle. Through time it continued to increase in size and change color. In October of 2014, my mother lost all sight in her right eye. We made an appointment with her eye specialist to see what was happening.
On her appointment date, the doctor informed us that the freckle had turned into a form of melenoma cancer and fluid was leaking from it. He schedule an appointment for her to see an Oncologist at UVA hospital in Charlottsville, Virginia.
When we arrived for her first appointment at UVA the onocologist done lots of tests and the outcome was that he could do radiation treatment by building a plaque. The onocologist sent us over to the Emily Couric Cancer Center to have measurements done on the tumor so they could build the radiation plaque. Once the plaque was built we had to return back to UVA for mom to have surgery and have the plaque placed on the back of her right eyeball. The following day we returned back to the Onocologist for more tests to make sure the plaque had not shifted off of the tumor.
Mom was sent home to wear the plaque for five days. After the five days Mom was to return back to UVA to have surgery to remove the plaque from her eye.
They informed us that this form of melenoma cancer can spread to her liver, lungs, and breast. Therefore, my mother has to have tests the rest of her life to monitor the cancer.
The tumor on her eye has reduced down to 2.2mm in size. Her Oncologist said that he will continue to monitor the tumor and other organs for growth of cancer throughout her life.
As a result from all the trips to UVA, which is a 5 and 1/2 hour drive from our home, it has caused alot of financial hardships.
So, at this time we are having to ask for donations to help with travel expenses such as gas, food, and lodging.
Cancer is an awful health condition that has hit us all in some form or another.
Any and all help that can be offered will be greatly appreciated.
