Hello all,

This is an old-fashioned request for your help. It's not a business transaction. I'm asking for your kindness, which I know is the thing my friends have most.

Some of you may know that a few years ago I started writing creatively again after years of struggling to get pen to paper, or finger to keyboard.

I have been writing ever since, doing advertising copy and stories and novels – basically anything I could to make money from writing.

But at the same time I've harboured a dream to get back into stage writing.

Years ago I used to write episodes of The Bill for Thames TV. It all went horribly wrong after I received a punch in the head. Brain surgery, depression and 10 years of not knowing what to do with my life ensued.

A few years ago I turned it round. I pulled myself out of the mess I was in and have been chasing my dream to write ever since.

I've published stories and written books.

Then a few years ago I met some singers, The Three Belles.

I wrote a book about them entitled 'The Three Belles Star in "We'll Meet Again"' and we've gone on to work together on all sorts of projects.

The work I've done with them has been some of the most creative and profoundly satisfying, in my life.

This year, The Three Belles and I are taking a brand new comedy to the Edinburgh Fringe.

It's called 'London Life'. It's a show about a cult magazine that was published all the way through the war. It's silly, it's saucy and it's great fun.

It's also costing a lot of money to go there. The Three Belles have raised enough to cover accommodation and travel for us all, paying the actors who are working with us – but we've got a shortfall in our resources and are funding this show out of our own not very deep pockets.

I don't have much money. The truth is, I've written the shows I've written because I can't live without writing.

It's pure passion. I'm not doing this show for money – but because I've never done Edinburgh before and because it's a dream come true to have my show performed in front of an audience, night after night.

10 years of being out in the wilderness not writing is a long time out of anyone's creative life. I'm going to Edinburgh, come hell or high water.

That's why I need your help.  Your kindness will go towards my subsistence for 12 days. £25 is not a lot of money per day – but it will be just enough to get by.

I really need your help with this to make it possible. Anyone who knows me will know how important this project is to me.

If you would be willing to buy me a friendly drink down the pub some time, then I'd like to call that pint forward.  I'll buy you one back when I see you.

If I've ever helped you out – done you a favour or a kindness – I'd like to call that kindness back in, now.

Those moments when we talked a whole load of things through and you went away feeling better, those moments of laughter, that friendly hug, words of support, the time something was playing on your mind and you needed someone to listen, the moment you couldn't decide what to do and we weighed it all up together, the time when I got you to see a fear in a new way and you started feeling better about your life - all of those things are what I'm asking you to remember.

This is my request. Help me as a friend get to Edinburgh.

You could help with £1, £5, £10, £25 (one whole day), £50 (2 days) - even £100 if you like. Whatever feels right would be so gratefully received.

I'm not offering formal perks or gifts or giveaways for set amounts. If you give over £10, there's something for you. But more importantly, I want to give you my heartfelt thanks and offer you a cup of tea and biscuit or two if you come round to mine for a chat some time.

I'll give you a hug, too. But only if you want. :-)

Thank you so much for your help.

All my love,

Matt Wingett.

PS - If you'd let other people know about this, too, I'd be so very grateful. Thanks again!

PPS - I've already had such a good response from this, so thank you. If I get over the target figure, I'll be using the rest to supplement costumes for the show, which have been expensive!

A signed London Life script, plus more

If you donate £10 or more, I'll send you a copy of the London Life script signed by me, the cast and The Three Belles, a pdf of an original London Life magazine from the 1940s, plus a collection of my stories, in e-book format. That's a nice little bundle, I think!
