FullSoul Canada hasn't added a story.
Our story begins in a Ugandan clinic where a young woman - Alice - began to bring new life into the world. A young Canadian student, Christina Marchand, was their to observe the delivery process as Alice began to lose a lot of blood. There was no bag of blood to replenish her supplies. Watching Alice's vitals weaken, Christina and the medical staff felt powerless. Alice's life began to slip away and soon she was gone.
Aſterwards, Christina leſt the delivery room to take a walk around the outside of the clinic. While clearing her head and letting the emotions flood through her, Christina stumbled upon the scene in the picture on the front cover. It was Alice's husband and child, anxiously awaiting to hear the news of the birth... to welcome new life, not knowing they would soon be saying goodbye.
FullSoul Canada is a company that is rooted in making an impact in the world by working to make the birthing process safer for women in Uganda and similar places around the world. In 2013, our co-founder, Christina Marchand, spent 4 months in Uganda helping to educate mothers and health professionals on pathways to a safer birthing process. While there, Christina witnessed the staggering number of fatalities and complications stemming from lack of access to medical aid, lack of education for local women and the lack of sanitary medical tools to accomplish a safe delivery.
Recognizing that this was a "wicked" problem, Christina was constantly trying to figure out how she could begin to make steps towards positive change in the communities she was working in. The need for sterile medical tools was something Christina kept coming back to, and she realized that she could continue to help in Uganda by providing access to these necessary tools. This is how the idea of FullSoul Medical Delivery Kits was born.
Returning to Canada, Christina shared her story with her family, friends and her fiancé Hyder Hassan. Hyder is a longstanding humanitarian and banker. With Christina's experience and Hyder's humanitarian perspective and strategic vision the FullSoul Canada social enterprise was born.
We are working to equip hospitals in Uganda with medical kits outfitted with the proper tools needed for a safer, more hygienic birth.
- These medical kits will contain items such as scissors, needle holders, kidney dishes, forceps and more.
- Access to these kits will increase the safety of the delivery process and decrease the risk of spreading diseases such as HIV.
This summer, FullSoul Canada will be launching its
first line of high-end luxury shirts to support the costs of medical
delivery kits in Uganda and other societies that could benefit from
safer and more sanitary delivery processes. Each shirt will be
manufactured with
social impact at its core. Everyone who
purchases a shirt will be part of the fabric of change we are working
to weave in the lives of mothers, new born babies and medical
practitioners in Uganda, and similar communities all over the word.
The FullSoul social enterprise model focuses on the Three P's: People, Profit and Planet. We work with the mission and ideals of a non-profit using a for-profit model. The fashion- line will fund a soulful Profit. The medical kits will help establish a more soulful Planet. The FullSoul team's effort to become our best, while also changing the world will make us more soulful People.
At FullSoul Canada, in every endeavour, we strive to become our best while also changing the world. We know that just as we try to change the world, the world changes us. Every experience is an opportunity for learning and personal growth, so we strive to make the most out of everything we do. We are in an environment of 70% implementation and 30% innovation. We are constantly encouraged to discover our potential in new ways and realize the impact we can have in our world.
The are three core values at FullSoul:
- Empowerment. Empower our FullSoul team members to constantly innovate and execute with reciprocity
- Engagement. Engage our clients and community with value-added solutions that focus on generating profit and social return on investment.
- Enlightenment. Enlighten the world and lead FullSoul by example as a "best practice" social enterprise.
The medical kits provided to Ugandan hospitals will include tools such as: various forceps, scissors, and kidney dishes. All of these items will be sourced from a local, Ugandan, non-profit supplier that provides medical grade items and has previous experience working with the local hospitals.
Cabinets will also be constructed in each hospital to store the medical kits in a safe place until they are required for use. These cabinets will be built by local Ugandan contractors. SoulFull remains mindful of the opportunities for partnership within and support of the local economies in Uganda.
The complete implementation cost of each kits is approximately $400 CAD from production, to implementation, to use and disposal. This includes cost for travel, labour, and the cost of medical materials.
During the implementation of the medical kits this summer, the FullSoul team will be joined by Vancouver filmmaker Mackenzie Warner, who will be gathering footage for a documentary. The documentary will share the stories of the women, children and medical practitioners in Uganda and depict the realities of the birthing process and how FullSoul's kits are geared to help. The film will be used to educate local and global audiences, and build FullSoul's brand. The documentary will help engage the audience and provide inspiration form them to live more soulful lives by connecting with FullSoul and purchasing our fashion.
It is our intention to premiere the film at our official company launch in the fall of 2014. We also intend to submit the film to festivals upon completion to expand our reach.
At FullSoul, we believe in dreaming big and seeing those dreams become a reality. This year, we have two specific projects that we are working to make a reality for ourselves and those passionate about our cause. Our first project is a documentary film telling the story of the realities of childbirth in Uganda and what FullSoul is doing to make positive change in the lives of the mothers, children and health practitioners. Our second project is an official launch event for our online store and documentary. This event will take place in the fall of 2014 and will be the official premiere of the documentary and of select pieces from our current and future fashion lines.
Because we are a start-up company with big ambitions, we want to achieve these in our first year of incorporation, but we need help to do so. If you are interested in contributing to the FullSoul vision, we have set up different sponsorship levels that will fund the documentary and our launch event. These sponsorships last one year and can be renewed annually.
We recognize how significant these contributions are to our existence and to creating positive change in the world. We appreciate those who participate in the sponsorship program and wish to be mutually helpful through our appreciation packages.
