This is a fund raising campaign to help my mom, Skip Bonds, defray the costs of her doctor ordered testing to identify whether or not she has breast cancer genes in her DNA.The cost is over $4700! Medicare will not cover this testing as she does not meet the requirement of having 3 immediate relatives that have had confirmed diagnoses of breast cancer. Even though Skip has twice survived breast cancer, once 18 years ago in one breast and then 8 years ago in the other breast (in my mind those are already two separate diagnoses as they were both primary sites), and her mother and grandmother both likely died from metastatic breast cancer but were very advanced in their diseases when the cancers were discovered (back is those days they just called it "The Cancer" and didn't specify the primary site), still medicare will not pay. She is now fighting cancer of a different kind in one of her breasts - post-radiation angiosarcoma (a cancer of the lining of the blood vessels) which is a result of the radiation therapy she underwent as part of her treatment to cure the breast cancer in that breast years ago.The genetic testing will give her doctors needed information. If she has the breast cancer genes then there is definitive reason to expect future risk and warrant a double mastectomy when they are ready to do surgery following her current chemotherapy treatments (and medicare would likely cover the removal of both breasts - without this information the current plan is to only remove the one breast). This testing is crucial to Skip's team of physicians and the decisions they have to make, It also effects the insurance coverage to have both breasts removed. And finally, the outcome of this genetic testing will impact Skip's daughters and their own respective breast cancer risks and decisions. Please donate if you feel led and help Skip with the costs of this testing! Thank you!
