Downs Dorset hasn't added a story.
LEJOG2014
The focus of our ‘Lejog’ ride is to raise awareness and ultimately money to provide support and assistance for the families of children with Downs Syndrome in Dorset.
Children with Downs Syndrome do not have a disease. They do not actually suffer from the condition. Given the right support and development they can grow up and lead happy lives. Many go on to higher education or spend their adult life in the work place or local community.
However the specific requirements and health issues that often accompany these children can place huge and immediate demands on family members, both physically and emotionally. Getting the right treatment and care at the outset is not cheap and can prove to be a significant burden on families who are already making huge sacrifices to care for their loved ones.
Our ride was spurred on by the stories of two local children with downs syndrome, Neive and Ollie with the ultimate objective of setting up and maintaing a new charity 'Downs In Dorset' to help provide support for children with Downs Syndrome in Dorset.
You can read more about their specific stories here.
Downs In Dorset
Downs in Dorset was originally set up by Jo Phillpot in 2010 following the birth of her daughter Georgia. It followed her experience of a lack of support for parents of children aged between 0-5 years of age with Downs Syndrome in Dorset.
The group is now run by Jo Scates along with Jo Phillpot. Jo Scates is the mother of two year old Ollie.
The Downs in Dorset group meets the first Friday of every month at the children’s centre in Somerford, Christchurch.
It offers invaluable peer support and free advice to others in a similar situation. It is now looking to broaden its scope and raise sufficient funds to enable the group to register as a charity.
Their aims are to promote awareness of the group to others among others who may not even know that this support exists, reduce stigma and increase acceptance of children with Downs Syndrome within the local and wider community.
They are also looking to get a speech and language therapist, physiotherapist and occupational therapist to attend the group to help assist and offer advice to parents and encourage their children’s development.
PLEASE HELP US TO REACH OUR TARGET!
We are riding 1000 miles because we believe that by raising awareness we can start to craft a brighter future for these children and their families.
Please support us. By making a donation you will be supporting local children just like Neive and Ollie and securing them a brighter future.
