In March, I had three rounds of "Moh's Procedure". This is surgeon-speak for "Carefully cut out chunks of face and check them under a microscope to make sure we got all the cancery bits". Mine took three tries.

The next day I had five hours of reconstructive surgery to pry up part of my cheek, swivel it over, and use it (plus some cartilage from my right ear) to plug up the crater left by the Moh's. A compulsory nose job, if you will, and I still don't look anything like Angelina.

Still pretty cool, right? Because, 99% success rate of No More Cancer. Thankfully, insurance covered most of the $30,000+. Hooray, insurance! I'm all done now, right?

Nope. I recently started getting bills for the parts the insurance doesn't pay. There are a bunch of them. Why, just yesterday I learned of a new (to me) $900. Apparently, I owe around $3000 in health costs. Note to self: look into second career in cosmetic surgery, or possibly hospital administration.

I am a writer and have been Home Mom for the last 5 years, so I've had no regular income of my own at all. I've been awake nights wondering how our family budget can take this huge health hit. Answer: Not.

Hence, this campaign. This is hard for me to do, but it is just a little easier than spending the rest of 2013 like this: "Sorry, son - no football uniform for you. Spent all the money on my nose." "Honey, you'll just have to keep driving on that bald tire. I need the money to pay for my nose." And, too soon, "No groceries this week. Sent the money to my nose."

Now, I know we are all hanging on by the skin of our teeth these days, and there are so many worthy places for our imaginary disposable income. If you want to and it is easy for you, please contribute. Like or share if you feel like it. Or send the groovy positive energy; it's all good. No pressure, no worries.

Moral: wear sunscreen. Also, beach cover-ups. And Hats. Hats are good.
