A few weeks ago, I met Rebecca when my sister, Katrina Lewis Mizell found her missing dog and returned him to her. She and my sister became fast friends, and then we started talking on facebook. Rebecca very quickly and thoroughly stole our hearts. Through our many conversations, we were dismayed to learn that Rebecca and her family have been living in a FEMA trailer for the past 8 years since hurricane Katrina. The trailer is not handicap equipped, and it is nearly impossible for her parents to maneuver her wheelchair around their home. Due to deformities caused by Proteus syndrome, Rebecca is unable to bathe in a regular tub, and has to be bathed in a child's pool in her living room. Her family also is in great need of a handicap equipped van, as she is unable to sit in a standard car seat and has to travel to her doctor appointments via ambulance. Trips for enjoyment and sight seeing are pretty much out of the question at the moment.

According to The Proteus Syndrome Foundation: "At this time there are over 120 documented cases worldwide. However, not all cases of proteus syndrome are documented, therefore it is unknown how many individuals have this syndrome.

The syndrome became widely known when it was determined that Joseph Merrick (the patient depicted in the play and movie “The Elephant Man”) had severe Proteus syndrome rather than neurofibromatosis as was initially suggested."

Rebecca also has Arnold Chari Malformation, as well as 2 other medical conditions of which I can't recall the names. Please forgive my faulty memory. I'll have to ask Rebecca and then post them here later.

Returning to the main purpose of starting this page, we are on a mission to get a home for Rebecca. My plan is to inform, educate, nag, beg, whatever it takes to get Rebecca the little house with a fenced in yard that she needs. I don't plan to stop until she also has a handicap van to travel in. She is a huge Elvis fan and wants to see Graceland. I want to make that happen. I'd like to have all my friends, family and everyone who signs onto this page to go along for the journey and help me make this a reality. If we keep praying, passing the word along and educating as we go, eventually we are going to see a miracle. I can feel this deep in my heart and know it to be true.
