Abi Morris hasn't added a story.
We are hoping to raise £7500 for a diabetes alert dog from Service Dogs Europe (http://www.servicedogseurope-uk.com/diabetes-alert-dogs-information/) for our 3 year old son Toby, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when he was only 22 months old.
Unfortunately as Toby is not yet 5 he does not qualify for a D.A.D through any charities and even when he does turn 5 we would have to wait 2 - 3 years with no guarantee that he would actually be accepted onto their programme, by then the damage would have been done.
We and the staff at our local hospital have struggled to keep Toby's levels steady, but because he is so sensitive to any change in insulin doses it is proving to be virtually impossible. That, coupled with the fact that Toby is now attending pre-school and picking up lots of bugs has meant that Toby experiences swings in his blood glucose levels which makes him feel extremely poorly, with bad headaches, sickness, dizziness, mood swings and bad hypos, which in themselves can be extremely dangerous as it means that the person can go into unconsciousness. Plus the overwhelming worry of what these constant highs and lows can mean for Toby's future, such as loss of eyesight and limbs and a shorter lifespan.
A diabetes alert dog will be able to detect high or low blood sugars day or night. Being so young Toby can't tell us how he is feeling and even though we test his blood sugars regularly there are times when we will miss high or low blood sugars, especially at night. A diabetes alert dog would be trained to alert us when Toby needs help, this means we can act quickly and prevent Toby from going too high or too low giving him a better quality of life, a longer life and will help prevent complications, such as damage to his eyesight and loss of limbs. We are hoping with your help we can raise enough money for a DAD (diabetes alert dog) for Toby that will completely change his life for the better.
Toby doesn't remember a life without feeling ill, but we are hoping to change this with a DAD!
Thank you!
