Welcome to the Pink Polka Dot Project!
Because girls shouldn't have to put a period on education!
Imagine your life without access to feminine products.
Many girls in Uganda drop out of school due to this very problem. Girls are missing an average of two weeks per term because of their periods, causing them to fall behind and eventually drop out. Educated girls are more likely to take control of their lives, get better jobs, and raise healthier, more educated children. Reusable sanitary pads will last a girl her entire school career and even into adulthood.
Last October I learned that Chris's group (shown in the video
below) was traveling to Uganda in two weeks. Having read about the
lack of sanitary pads, I asked if they would be willing to take some,
and they agreed. Disposable pads would quickly run out, and there is
no trash collection system to deal with the waste, so reusable pads
are the best option. They last for many years, and I also supply
panties that can be adjusted as the girls grow. I quickly sewed 180
pads (20 complete sets) to send along. It made a big difference to
those 20 girls, however it was a tiny number compared to all of the
girls that need them.
I was so inspired by all of the wonderful things that Chris's
group does, that I committed to go along with them this November to
help transport and distribute the pads, undies, and other items. You
may wonder why I don't just send the pads rather than going there to
distribute them in person. Unfortunately, often times packages sent to
Uganda do not make it to their destination. When they do, the
recipient has to pay an undetermined amount of tax that they cannot
afford to get them released from the post office. Many of the other
supplies are purchased there and taken to the villages to make sure
they are properly distributed.
This year with the help of additional sewing volunteers, and your
donations, we can really make an impact.
Together we can provide girls with reusable pads to help keep
them in school.
Each pad set (shown above) includes 9 pads of various sizes, undies, 1 waterproof bag, and 1 waterproof liner (made with pink polka dot fabric).
Your kind donations will go towards the purchase of supplies to make pad sets, and travel fees. Overages will go towards other items mentioned in the video above, including mosquito nets, vitamins, glasses, and HIV and malaria testing.
Thanks to the products available to us we can go to work, school, grocery shopping, ride bikes...anytime of the month.
So, take some selfies, and show off all of the fun things your can do in your pink polka dots. Share your photos along with this cause or post them to my facebook page. www.facebook.com/pinkpolkadotproject
Thank you for helping keep Ugandan girls in school.
