Nate has recently been diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder called ATR-X syndrome. This stands for alpha thalasemmia with mental retardation on the X chromosome. Nate is at the severe end of the spectrum.

Nate has an undiagnosed genetic disorder. At first doctors thought he would live weeks, then months, and finally they admit that they just don't know. Whatever Nate has is extremely rare and he has been through a vast number of tests. Nate's main issue is his core hypotonia ( floppy muscles) which means he cant sit or stand and doesn't breathe very well. Nate was oxygen dependent from birth to just before he turned 2. He requires night time ventilation through a mask as when in a deep sleep he breathes too shallowly to remove sufficient carbon dioxide from his blood. The ventilator helps him to do this, and breathes for him if he stops. Nate's development is delayed, and we don't know what he will be able to do in the future, or what sort of future he will have.
Nate is a happy bubbly boy who loves his family and friends. He enjoys socialising ( seriously), noise and general chaos (which is fortunate). He has spent a great deal of time in hospital and can become seriously ill quite quickly.
We want to raise money to provide Nate with specialist equipment, aiming to help him enjoy life and to develop as best he can.

Nate has recently been diagnosed with ATRX syndrome. He is at the severe end of the spectrum and although there are some people who have this disorder alive in their 30s many die before their 5th birthday, particularly those with breathing problems
