Jerry’s fight for life began in the early hours of Friday, October 5. Jerry and his childhood bestfriend, Jerrod, went to a birthday party for Jerrod’s ex-girlfriend Shea at her request. There were 10-15 people at Shea’s house, including 3 toddlers under the age of 2 years old. Jerry and Jerrod learned Shea also sent text messages to her child’s father, Nathan. Knowing that Nathan and Jerrod do not get along, Shea had the intent of seeing the two guys fight for her. When Nathan arrived, he and Jerrod started arguing. Jerry convinced Jerrod that the fight wasn’t worth it and they turned around to go inside the house. As they walked away, Nathan reached for his gun and shot Jerrod in the back. When Jerry turned to catch Jerrod, Nathan shot Jerry in the chest.

While Jerrod was pronounced dead, Jerry clung to life. He was care flighted to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler. Paramedics performed CPR twice and had a defibrillator used on him. He had a collapsed lung that was filling up with blood. He was rushed into emergency surgery to repair the damage from the gunshot. During the surgery, he suffered three broken ribs. Doctors said he had an angel guiding the bullet as the trajectory path should have hit his heart or a major artery. Jerry remained in Trauma Neuro CCR until Monday, October 8 when he was downgraded to Trauma Step Down ICU. He amazed doctors at how quickly he progressed from this life-threatening injury.

Eight days after he was shot, Jerry was discharded and returned home Saturday, October 13.

Jerry’s road to recovery is going to be a long journey: physically, mentally, emotionally, and financially. While he has insurance through his mother’s work, it is not able to pay for the majority of his medical bills. Jerry is unable to work at this time due to the extent of his injuries. If you are able, please help Jerry on his journey back to normal life.

Update on others involved in the shooting: Jerrod was laid to rest October 8, 2012. Shea was also shot by Nathan and is recovering at home from her non-threatening injuries. After being chased by police, Nathan shot himself in his truck; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
