Alisha Pagan Acuna hasn't added a story.

My daughter Brittany is 11 yrs old and has Type 1 Diabetes. She needs a Diabetic Alert Dog to help save her life. This is our story! On October 25th 2009 our lives changed forever. Brittany was taken to the hospital and after several hours and needles later was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. Please understand. This is not the diabetes you hear about on tv. Type 2 Diabetes CAN often be controlled with a healthy diet, weight, and exercise and is often curable. But Type 1 which is what Brittany has is not curable. It is with her 24/7, 365 days a year. It does not sleep or take a vacation. Insulin is life support for Brittany and without it she will die. As a mother I want to protect her and make this go away but I can't. I know I am supposed to be the strong one for her but, instead she is the strong for me. When I cry she tells me that everything will be okay. But I know what this diagnosis means for her and it scares me to death. It has been over two years since the diagnosis and I think I am still in some kind of denial. It just seems so impossible that my child has a disease that can ultimately kill her if we don’t monitor every bite of food or drink that enters her body. After two years I still wake up sometimes twice a night and check her sugar as she sleeps to make sure it hasn’t dropped too low or gone up too high. There are plenty of times that I have to wake her and make her drink juice and eat a snack in the middle of the night even if she doesn't want it. There’s also that fear every morning when I wake and walk towards her bedroom what I might find when I open her door. There have been many instances when she is almost passed out on the floor from a low blood sugar and I am holding her and forcing juice or icing in her mouth. It is the scariest feeling. My family and friends think I am so great at taking care of her and always tell me how great I handle this whole thing but little do they know how often it is that I cry when I am alone. It consumes me. It is my every thought...... This is where a Diabetic Alert Dog (D.A.D.) comes in. A D.A.D detects when Brittany's sugar is low or high, day or night. He can even sense a rise or fall in blood sugar 20-45 minutes before it happens. Crazy right?? He will be trained to go get help from another person, get her supplies, bring her juice from the fridge, and even call 911 with a special device if she is unresponsive. The cost of the dog is very substantial and after a lot of praying the decision to buy him was the clear answer. I am working with many organizations on different fundraising activities and also asking for your help. Any amount will be greatly appreciated. If you would like some more information on these amazing dogs please go to warrenretrievers.com. I truly can't thank you enough in advance. I pray every night that they find a cure. But until that day we will trust in Jagger our D.A.D. Our GUARDIAN ANGEL!!
