Reconnecting with my Filipino roots has been a powerful and emotional journey. Growing up, I was somewhat distant from my heritage, often influenced more by the culture around me than the one I came from. But as I got older, I felt a growing desire to understand where I truly came from — to explore the traditions, stories, and values that shaped my family and ancestors.
I began by immersing myself in Filipino culture: learning Tagalog phrases, cooking traditional dishes like adobo and sinigang, and listening to the music and folktales that once echoed through my grandparents’ home. I also took time to study Philippine history and the resilience of our people, which gave me a newfound respect for our identity and strength. Each step felt like a piece of my identity falling into place.
What surprised me most was how this reconnection brought me closer to my family. Conversations with older relatives became richer, filled with stories I had never heard before. Celebrating traditions like Simbang Gabi and fiestas now feels more personal and meaningful. Reclaiming my Filipino roots has not only grounded me but also opened a deeper sense of belonging — a reminder that my heritage is not just in the past, but something I carry forward with pride.
