 The community of the Nasenyi village is about 1,000 people, 150 of those are Jewish. All of us suffer from a lack of clean water supply. The community has undergone unheard human miseries due to constant droughts and unreliable rainfalls. Nasenyi area lies in the district of Budaka, in a remote area characterized by seasonal rivers that dry up with constant droughts.

The community relies on water from wells, which run dry if droughts persist and also can become contaminated. There are also ponds of stagnant water which are used by both humans and animal.These are pictures of the local well, which has become contaminated:

Our people are generally at the mercy of our creator "Hashem" since the cleanliness of such waters is not assured. Sometimes it is contaminated with germs, as a result, many if the community members are admitted to the hospital including children and pregnant mothers.

 When that happens, people have to trek long distances to collect water from other ponds or wells, and even the quality of that water cannot be guaranteed.

 On the 6th of Feb 2022, one of our pregnant mothers had her baby die before giving birth. This was due to the severe fever which the baby contracted from the mother, who had drunk unfiltered, unboiled contaminated water. We have so far received two death reports due to contaminated water and many are at risk.

 However we can put an end to this by drilling a borehole. The boreholes can serve the whole community with clean safe water, because it is less likely to become contaminated. The project will improve access to clean water for rural community at Nasenyi village through drilling of a borehole.

The National Water and Sewage Corporation (Uganda’s water service) will provide project committee that will oversee the planning and implementation phases. The organization will get the boreholes drilling company and water pump supply company; it will also coordinate the entire project while seeking technical advice from the experts.

The National Water and Sewage Corporation will facilitate the formation of project committee that shall be composed of the project manager, program coordinator (our partner, director), community mobilizer, project financial manager and project evaluator. NWSC is ready to initiate the project in Nasenyi rural Jewish community. The community needs to come up with funds. The costs are as follows:

NWSC officials will spearhead the mobilization of community members of Nasenyi area. This will be realized through involvement of the community elders, local council officials, District officials, local assistant chief and area educational officer.

There will be a Village Health Team Community Network that will ensure full participation of community at different stages of the project.

This type of project has already been piloted in a number of rural districts of Uganda, see pictures below from Nebbi Town.

The Nasenyi water project will employ manual water pump which is more economical and sustainable than electric. This is much safer than the current well:

 NWSC will involve the community participation in the following ways:

• Contribution of land by Nasenyi Jewish Community
• Clearing the project site and digging of animal water reservoir
• Educating the community members on safe use of water
• Establish VHT (Village Health Team)-Community network that will ensure the sustainability of the project

The benefits of the project lie not only in providing clean water to Nasenyi villagers but also in the following:

• Improving the villagers’ health standards through provision of clean water
• Providing water for livestock
• Improving nutrition: the villagers will be able to practice subsistence farming using water from the borehole. The water will be used to grow vegetables that can be used to substitute their diet which is predominantly meat.
• Improvement of environment: the borehole water is also intended to be used in watering tree nursery that is meant to provide the villagers with trees. The area which is a semi desert shall have a new look! The project will also serve as a prototype to be replicated in other neighbouring villages and districts.

 NWSC with the help of a group of evaluators will form focus groups from Nasenyi area who will be used to find out whether the project has been able to serve their need of getting clean water. This will be analysed qualitatively.

 A survey to establish the extent to which people of Nasenyi area have been able to access clean water will also be conducted. The data collected shall be analysed quantitatively.

 NWSC will give report to relevant bodies. Strategic plan shall be drawn depending on the recommendations given in the report.

 The sustainability of Nasenyi water project is based on the following:

• Contribution from the community members: NWSC will mobilize the community to form a committee that will oversee the overall running of the project. This committee will also be responsible for collecting membership and regular fee from the community members.
• Subsistence farming: NWSC in partnership with school management will train the community on horticulture farming. Money raised from the sales will help in the maintenance of the project.
• Afforestation program: NWSC will initiate a tree seedlings nursery. The community will be supplied with these trees at a fee. The money raised will help in sustaining the project. A fee will be charged from the nomadic pastoral community for watering the animals.
• Local partnership: NWSC will manage relationships with the government, educate local communities and enlist the support of community leaders.
