My name is Laura Byrd. I am an old friend of Denzil’s, we met when he came to the United States to play for the Fayetteville Academy soccer team in 2003, as striker. He was scouted by our coaches who recognized his superb athletic abilities and talent as a soccer player. 

In his Junior year Denzil aged out to play soccer for the Academy as a senior - instead of letting him complete school and achieve his high school diploma from the private school that brought him there, his sponsor dropped him.  Outraged, Denzil lived with my father for a summer while we got his sponsorship extended and another family to host his stay. 

Denzil now faces another unfair situation in which he needs help, but I can’t do it alone. In the summer of 2020 Denzil’s brother, Dwight was murdered while at work one day. A few months after that two of the criminals who were involved in Dwight’s murder were also killed. With little to no evidence Denzil has been unlawfully charged and imprisoned for these violent crimes, for which he is innocent. 

While we are familiar with the many instances of unfair accusations in the criminal justice system and prison system in the United States, but it doesn’t hold a candle to some of the injustices that occur in Trinidad and Tobago. The prisoners have no access to toilets or running water, in addition to inhumane sanitation and violence inflicted by the prison guards. 

Denzil, like all of us, has his own flaws. But he has a good heart a family that cares deeply about him, but they are unable to put money towards his legal bills. His mother is already struggling to support his deceased brother Dwight's children. Before he was incarcerated Denzil was helping to support and care for his mother and nieces. 

Please find it in your heart to help us cover the cost of his experienced and talented Attorney, who is working diligently to uncover the truth that will prove Denzil's innocence for his ultimate release and acquittal to these egregious and unfounded accusations.
