About JusticeTrans
JusticeTrans is a mobile phone application (available on the Android™ Play Store and Apple App Store) and website. The LITE version launched unofficially on June 24, 2015, and launched officially on June 26, 2015. JusticeTrans’ vision is to be the most up-to-date application offering legal information about transgender rights across Canada. JusticeTrans will help foster an environment where transgender Canadians are increasingly aware of their legal rights in the face of an ever-changing legal environment.
Why It's Needed
Transgender people across Canada are facing high rates of inaccess to justice. In 2010, a comprehensive study was conducted by TRANSPulse of 433 Ontario transgender individuals. It was not aimed directly at legal problems, but did highlight some of those issues that the community faces. Of the results, 18-50% had reported being unemployed because of their gender identity, while another 13-28% had reported being fired because of it.
Further compounding these issues is the fact that approximately half of participants reported that their annual income was below $15,000 per year, putting paid legal services well out of their reach in many instances. Other issues faced by the community included police harassment and imprisonment. Clearly the community faces substantial issues, including legal issues, that need to be addressed.
How JusticeTrans Can Help
JusticeTrans aims to be the first mobile phone application in Canada that offers free legal information geared towards transgender individuals. In addition to providing free legal information, it will also provide lists of transgender-friendly legal service providers, so that individuals who require legal advice know who they can contact without being on the receiving end of harassment.
What JusticeTrans Needs
The project requires funds to ensure its continued presence and to create a more in-depth legal application for transgender individuals. This will entail legal research; mobile phone application development; the hiring of new employees; graphic design; promotional matierials; and website maintenance, among other things.
JusticeTrans is a Not-for-profit Corporation
As of June 11, 2015, JusticeTrans became a registered Not-For-Profit Corporation, governed by the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act. In order to ensure that this application remains free, I need your help to keep funding costs low. Everything going into this project has come out of my own pocket so far, and unfortunately my pockets are not deep. Any help that you can provide would be incredible, and would help ensure that transgender individuals across Canada have easier access to the legal services and information that we need.
About the Founder
JusticeTrans was founded in 2015 by Benjamin Vandorpe, a recent graduate of Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto, Ontario. He is a 26 year old transgender male with a keen interest in LGBTQ legal issues, access to justice, and technology.
