Bentley is our baby sharpei. He's 7 months old. We got him from a litter of 8 puppies last November.  Unfortunately Bentley turned out to be the unlucky one out of the litter and 3 weeks after we took him home he began having fainting episodes.  We took him to the vet where they ran some tests and we found out that he had to undergo emergency diaphragmatic hernia surgery.  But after making it successfully out of surgery, complications arose and the doctors weren't sure if he was going to make it.  We were heartbroken and we weren't ready to let him go, especially after waiting so long to get him.

After being in the ICU for a week, and under constant care at the hospital, Bentley pulled through :)  He is a fighter!  But due to the surgery, he came down with pneumonia.  We have been trying to clear up his pneumonia for the past 5 months with very limited success.  To add insult to injury he also contracted cornea ulcers 2 days before Christmas.  Bentley will most likely need entropion eye surgery in the near future in addition to elongated palate surgery.  In regards to the pneumonia, the doctor believes that the reason Bentley can’t seem to get rid of it is because he may have aspiration pneumonia.  This condition causes a dog's lungs to become inflamed due to the inhalation of foreign matter, from vomiting, or from the regurgitation of gastric acid contents.  In order to really see what is going on in his little body, more extensive tests will need to be done, which means added expense.

Over the past 5 months we have been in and out of the vet's and hospitals more times than my fingers and toes can count.  We never expected to be paying so many vet and hospital bills so soon after bringing Bentley home.  Even though we have pet insurance all of these surgeries and tests are not covered, due to the fact that all of these problems arose while we were waiting to have our insurance approved.  They now regard his conditions as pre-existing.

I know economic times are tough right now for everyone.  Our ultimate goal is to give Bentley a better life.  He has had it rough in his short life and he is only 7 months old. All of the issues he has had thus far we would never have expected in such a young puppy.  He still has so much to live for and even when the outcome looked grim he never gave up.  We refuse to give up on him. We are not asking for millions of dollars. Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Every little bit counts.  Our goal is to reach $10k for the tests and future surgeries Bentley will need but that insurance won’t cover.  All funds raised that are not used will be donated to the Shar Pei Rescue.  We will gladly pay it forward and donate the funds to them.  Please help us reach our goal!
