Hi my name is Erin McBrearty and with your help, I am trying to raise $10,000 for new adaptive monoski equipment.   This new equipment which I do not have available to me in my area, will allow me to get back out on the mountain skiing independently again.  I grew up in northern Ontario and started taking ski lessons at the age of two and it was soon one of my favorite things to do. Since relocating to Cranbrook I have enjoyed skiing the beautiful resorts that surround us in the East Kootenay area.

On April 21, 2012 I was in a serious snowmobiling accident which has left me as a paraplegic and a permanent wheelchair user.   While recovering in the hospital from my accident I made the decision to continue living my life as before and not giving up on anything that I enjoyed doing before my accident. In the winter of 2012, only 7 months after my accident I decided to take sitskiing lessons in Kimberly from a local volunteer instructor and some borrowed equipment.  It was a little difficult getting used to sitting down while skiing but once I caught on it didn't take me long to feel like I was skiing again. I enjoyed each lesson and definatly wanted to continue with the sport but in my area it is tough because there isn't the specialized equipment I need to do this.  During the winter of 2013 I didn't get to ski at all except for a week in March at the CADS festival in Kimberly. I was extremely lucky that the festival was at my local resort because I got some very good technical lessons on a monoski. The instructors at the festival were impressed with my strength and skill level for a beginner and they had assumed I had been skiing much longer than I actually had. They all encouraged me to continue with the sport and to look into some of the race programs.

Because I live in a smaller community there isn't the specialized equipment I need to continue progressing and skiing independently again. I had applied for a equipment grant through BC adaptive snow sports but the funding fell through, so now With your help I am trying to raise enough money to purchase a new sitski.  Without your help I could not afford to purchase this adaptive equipment because I live on a disability income. Please help in any way you can even the smallest donation will help in a huge way. I have made this fundraising page at FundRazr, and have placed donation jars throughout my area.  My goal is to raise $10,000.00 in order for me to purchase a sitski and all the nessecary equipment so that I can start skiing in 2015. Please help me reach my goal !
