Due to its largely terrestrial habitats, the Owston’s civet is vulnerable to snare traps, one of the very common hunting methods throughout their home ranges. Owston’s civet appears to be in higher demand than other civets due to their beautiful pelt and the large scent glands that are used in traditional medicine. Therefore, Owston’s civets have become one of the rarest civet species in Vietnam.

There are only 19 Owston’s civets in captivity all over the world, which are managed by Save Vietnam Wildlife (SVW). For 12 years, no Owston’s civets have been transferred to the rescue centres in Vietnam. This is because the confiscated Owston’s civets have been released straight back into the closest forests without quarantine and monitoring, additionally they get auctioned for legal market.

While Save Vietnam’s Wildlife will continue to work with the Vietnamese government to improve the law and the enforcement and placement options for confiscated wildlife. We are going to launch an awareness campaign to highlight the importance of Owston’s civet conservation, and to ensure that confiscated Owston’s civets will be transferred to rescue centres. We hope the campaign will no only help the Owston’s but help other wildlife species. The first stage of the campaign will include an informative poster of the Owston’s and a 2015 + 2016 calendar, which will be sent to all ranger stations and offices in Vietnam. Together with the calendar and poster, the SVW team will select 30% of Vietnams provinces (where the confiscation is working effectively) to present the threats and conservation requirements for Owston’s civets and provide the skills on handling and caring for confiscated wildlife.

Please donate for the awareness campaigns to save the Owston’s civet. 10 USD from you means one more ranger stations will get the a calendar and poster (photos) and Owston’s civets will get a better chance of being saved. If your organization would like to donate towards the campaign over $1,000, your logo will be added on to the poster and calendar.
