Marcela DelaPava Powers hasn't added a story.
Right about the time Danny van Schaik's hair was growing back in, his sister Juliette's was starting to fall out. Two solid years into the battle of his life against leukemia — a gauntlet of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery — Danny was finally reclaiming his life as 2014 began.
Cancer doesn't just dig its claws into the patient; it gnaws away at the lives, health and well-being of entire families. Danny's illness had a devastating ripple effect on his 15 year-old sister, Juliette, who was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa in January of 2014. At her low point, she weighted one hundred pounds, while anxiety and depression isolated her from the people she loved. She desperately wanted help, but was afraid that her pain would add to the burden her family already shouldered.
The families and caregivers of people like Danny play a crucial role sustaining a patient's body and mind during treatment and the long, hard road to recovery. But what it can be easy for outsiders to forget is that sometimes those supporters need supporting, too. Throughout all of their challenges, the van Schaik family could not fall … not because they were strong enough to stand on their own, but because there was an entire community there to catch them.
As such, Team unSchaikable is based on a very simple premise: people are stronger together than apart. The van Schaik family lives this and hopes to inspire others with their example. Its mission is to provide emotional and financial support to The van Schaik family, as well as to raise mental health awareness for the families of patients currently batting cancer.
Team unSchaikable has come together to take on the challenge of competing on the Toughman 70.3 Triathlon on September 7, 2014. On this day, our team will be swiming 1.2 miles, biking 56 miles, and running 13.1 miles throughout Westchester County, NY. Marcela, Martha & Allison took on this challenge to raise mental health awareness and support The van Schaik family through their ongoing struggles.
Please support Team unSchaikable by making a tax-deductable donation. Your generous contribution will go directly to The van Schaik family to help alleviate some of the financial hardships this family has been facing for over 2 years. Your donation will help the family manage the ongoing treatments that both their children require so one day they can live healthy, happy & fulfilling lives.
Please help us make a difference and support our cause by making a donation. Any little bit helps and will be greatly appreciated!
