Body Love hasn't added a story.
Hi! I'm Jes.
I’m a mental health professional and body advocate who has giddily given years of my life to sharing the good word of body acceptance, with positive results. The Today show loved me. The BBC loved me. CNN loved me. Huffington Post loved me. And I loved all of them for giving me a platform with which I could reach the entire world. My work has only picked up speed since my launch into the international eye and The Body Love Conference is the interactive, accessible, and inspirational manifestation of everything I believe in.
And I need dollars to make this happen.
What is The Body Love Conference?
The Body Love Conference is a high energy, positive and progressive event where women can come together to build a community in a supportive environment while participating in revolutionary presentations and workshops. Backed by an all-volunteer staff of dedicated body-positivity activists and artists, Baker’s Body Love Conference dream is well on its way to becoming reality. Among the body-positivity celebs already booked to attend are EffYourBeautyStandards founder and model Tess Munster, Canada’s Louise Green of Body Exchange, Jen McLellan of Plus Size Mommy Memoirs and local celebrity photographer Jade Beall of A Beautiful Body Project. With over 400 anticipated attendees and an all-day program of presentations and workshops on a range of subjects – featuring the history of the beauty myth, social concepts of aging, post-birth bodies, clothing alteration, body-positive dance, overcoming self-hate with love, and why it’s crucial to challenge and reform social norms, among others.
It’s huge. It’s never been done before.
We’ve needed something like this forever, and it’s finally here.
Why are you focusing on loving something superficial like a body?
GREAT QUESTION! Here’s why: we are more likely to be told by the world that we are good people; funny, creative, intelligent, communicative, generous, maybe even extraordinary. What we are NOT told is that our bodies are beautiful just the way they are. We are taught that our figure is flawed, and not only is it flawed, but that the majority of our worth lies within our physical appearance. Which,of course is never “perfect enough” by societies standards. This affects our lives on a monumental level.
We become too embarrassed to meet up with the friend we haven't seen in years because we might have gained weight. We sabotage relationships through thinking that we're unworthy of physical affection. We hide our face when we have breakouts. We opt out of the dance class because we're worried we'll look ridiculous while participating. We don't approach potential friends because we assume they will judge our appearance before anything else. We shirk when walking in public spaces; trying to take up as little room as possible. We build our lives around the belief that we are undeserving of attention, love, and amazing opportunities when this couldn't be further from the truth.
Our bodies are installation art that we curate publicly. Our bodies are the first message those around us receive. Our bodies are our personal bookmarks in the world. Our bodies are magnificent houses for everything else that we are. Our bodies are a part of us, just like our kindness, talents, and passion. Yes, we are so much more than our outer shell, but our outer shell is an integral part of our being too.
This is why it is SO important that we learn to accept, embrace, and even fall head-over-heels in love with them! The way we view our bodies impacts the way we participate in the world, and it is my life mission to share the message that we can love ourselves as we are; right now. We don’t need to change our bodies, only our world.
Why should I give you my hard earned dollars?
Because 81% of 10 year olds are more afraid of being fat than cancer, war, or losing both of their parents. Because 40% of 9-10 year olds have already tried to diet. Because low self-esteem in children and teens is closely linked to eating disorders, unsafe sexual activity, and suicide. Because 91 percent of women are unhappy with their bodies. Because less than 4% of women would call themselves beautiful.
Because all bodies are inherently perfect, and all women deserve to know this.
Because the world lashed back at retailers who shame size, and refused to purchase their clothes. Because their sales have been steadily decreasing for the last 6 months. Because this shows that we, as a society, are ready for change.
Because this message of body love is bigger than a campaign, blog, or public figure. It’s a sweeping movement to offer ourselves the unconditional love we deserve so that we can face each day with our shoulders back, head high, and confident that we are perfect just the way we are… right now. Because it’s the truth, and the truth really can set you free.
Because we’ve been thinking about body love, and NOW is the time to put our plans into action. Now is the beginning of the rest of our lives, and we want to arm all women with the resources, inspiration, and support that they need to get out there and live their life to the fullest. Living a full life, while they are in love with themselves, mind, body and soul.
It’s a mighty fine investment, if you ask me.
Okay, you're totally right. But besides changing lives and bettering the world, what's in it for me?
