Last year I decide I wanted to make my birthday something more meaningful. I wanted to start a new tradition. No more cakes, cards, gifts, or other traditional birthday stuff. I wanted to give away something that meant something to me, my birthday. I decided to use the day to bless others. I raised $1000 last year and was able to make 60 blessing bags that were given to homeless people in DC. It was an exciting and humbling experience and a tradition I planned on continuing for years to come.

This year however, my birthday has kind of snuck up on me. My husband had dinner reservations for us and I have been thinking about what he might buy me as a gift. But last night that all changed. As my husband and I were leaving DC after a wonderful dinner together, I saw a homeless man digging in the trash, looking for something to eat. I felt sad for him and I looked down at the bag of leftovers I had in my lap. I had a very large piece of steak left that I was saving for my lunch and thought “No, I don’t want to give him my steak,” as if someone was asking me to share. Truthfully, someone was...

It is so easy for me to forget that everything I have is a blessing. I forget that God has not only provided for ALL of my needs, but He has blessed me with so much more. I thank God for reminding me of how blessed I truly am. I thank him for the humility I found in seeing that homeless man’s thankfulness for a leftover piece of steak.

With only two days left until my birthday, I will continue my new birthday tradition. I will be making blessing bags to hand out to homeless people in the DC metro area. If anyone would like to get involved, you can pray, make a donation, and/or come out and help assemble the bags.

I am once again looking forward to another year of not celebrating my birthday as we celebrate God’s love by helping others in need.
