My name is Alexandria, and I am a widowed mother of three beautiful children living in Edmonton. Over the past few years, my family has endured hardships far greater than any one person should be expected to handle alone.
For years, I have fought tirelessly to ensure my children are housed, fed, and safe while juggling serious, chronic health issues. I persevered because I had no choice. My children depend solely on me, and there is no one else to step in and support us.
Recently, my body reached its limit. I collapsed and spent several days in the intensive care unit, where I was diagnosed with a leaking heart valve.
I am now back home, but I am left feeling incredibly weak, in pain, terrified, and facing a daunting recovery ahead. My doctors have instructed me to rest, but rest feels like an unattainable luxury when you are raising three children alone and struggling to afford the bare essentials. I have no partner, no nearby family, no reliable transportation, and no savings.
This medical crisis didn’t occur in isolation.
For six exhausting years, I’ve found myself ensnarled in an administrative battle with the Canada Revenue Agency. The CRA wrongly diverted over $53,000 of my children’s Canada Child Benefit funds to an abusive ex-partner, despite a no-contact order against him. Even after providing thousands of pages of evidence, recorded calls, and formal complaints, the system has flatly refused to remedy this mistake.
The financial and physical toll of this systemic failure has cost my family everything:
My husband, Neal, sadly passed away on April 24, 2021, leaving me to navigate parenting by myself.
I lost a pregnancy on December 21, 2020, amidst this unrelenting stress.
We have faced eviction six times, directly due to this financial hardship.
My health has deteriorated completely. In addition to this new heart diagnosis, I am also managing a brain injury, CPTSD, ADHD, and Irlen syndrome.
Just when I should be focusing on rest and recovery for my heart, we are confronting the very real threat of homelessness.
Our housing provider has issued an eviction notice demanding $1,587 by June 26th. Despite my recent hospitalization and sudden drop in income, they have categorically refused to reassess my rent.
If we are evicted, my children and I will have nowhere to turn. We lack a safety net, family support, and even a vehicle to relocate.
I am not seeking luxury; I am simply asking for the fundamental necessities that allow us to breathe and endure so that I can care for my kids.
Every dollar raised will be directed towards:
Preventing the eviction on June 26th by immediately settling the $1,587 rent arrears.
Securing our housing for the upcoming months, allowing me to physically recover without the constant threat of homelessness.
Essential survival needs, including groceries, vital heart medications, and emergency transportation for medical appointments.
Daily support to assist in caring for my young children while I am too weak to do so myself.
Why you can trust me:
For six years, I have shared the same painful truth. I possess the documentation, legal evidence, and recordings. I am a mother who has been profoundly let down by the systems that are supposed to support families like mine.
Asking for help forces me to confront my vulnerabilities. Naturally, I am a survivor and an advocate. Yet, leaving the ICU made me aware that sheer determination is insufficient to ensure my children’s safety and wellbeing. I am reaching out for community support.
My children have already weathered a lifetime of trauma. I want to be present for them. I want to heal, rebuild, and provide them with the stable, safe childhood they are entitled to.
