Is this how it feels to be buried alive? It is dark, I am scared, the tears run out the corners of my eyes. (I am TEY's sister putting up this fund raiser for my brother.)
His name is TEY. He is a 54 yr old single parent who worked 6 to 7 days a week to support him and his daughter. He worked for the city for 10 yrs. He coached his daughters soft ball team. His daughter always attended Christian Private School. He never drank or smoked a cigarette in his life. He worked out at the gym weekly. He was a 170 lb almost 6' ft tall man. His purpose in life was to help others.
October 21, 2016, TEY's life changed in one instant. TEY felt a sore spot on the side of his neck, a knot the size of a grape. He went to doctors and was treated with antibiotics. Three days later, back at the doctors with a knot the size of a quarter. Doctors immediately did a biopsy. He was put on steriods by his doctor to try and stop the growth of whatever this knot was until the test results came back.
TEY explained to his work about his health and he was released from his position. Wait, no job, no insurance. Job said he could return when his health got better TEY had worked there for 10 yrs? The stress began.
A few days later, the quarter was now a golf ball and it was now inside of his mouth. Test results came back. Cancer. Doctor started to make arrangements for cancer treatment, but kept TEY on steroids to try and control the aggressive cancer. Pet scans were done along with other tests to rule out that the cancer was anywhere else in his body. No other cancer, just in the tumor in his neck. More steroids.
Hurry for treatment,TEY prayed nightly, as the tumor was growing quickly. TEY will never forget waking up and trying to get his daughter to call 911, he could not breath. Tumor was now the size of a childs nerf football, both inside and outside of his neck. Emergency surgery done to remove his back teeth to give more room inside his mouth so he could breath. More steroids.
October 21st will be burned in his memory for the rest of his life. Life is so short, one day you are ok and the next you are gasping for air. Stress level is through the roof as he looks at his daughter with fear in her eyes. Being a single parent is hard, as all single parents experience. What is going to happen to his daughter, why is this happening?
Prayers answered, cast was made of his head, and he was going to finally start radiation, and chemo. 5 radiation treatments a week and one chemo treatment weekly.
TEY's first radiation was the hardest thing in his life he has ever done. Laying there with a "cast" over his head and shoulders, with only a hole over his nose to breath. Is this how it feels to be buried alive? It is dark, he is scared, the tears run out the corners of TEY's eyes.
TEY's first week of treatment was very hard, all he kept thinking about was how was he going to keep his family running. It was only the two of them, but his monthly bills without food and gas for his truck totaled $2792.00. With no income coming in and his health in trouble, his mind would not stop.
Saturday, day after first week of radiation and first chemo treatment, TEY tried to roll out of bed, and he could not. He had lost the use of both arms, and both legs. 911 again. TEY was admitted into hospital again. TEY's daughter had suddenly became an adult.
TEY had a lot of time laying there in the hospital bed thinking about his life. He just did not know what to do, and began to think he did not have the strength to go on. He now had cancer, neurophathy, and was paralized in both arms and legs. After a week in the hospital with more tests being ran, the paralizing seemed to occur because of the combination of all the steroids with the radiation and chemo. Physical therapy began and the statement that within a few weeks after TEY was weaned off the steroids, he should be able to start having feelings in his limbs again.
TEY is now at home again, starting to be able to shuffle around. Feelings are in fact starting to return, but very weak. His body has been weaned off the steroids, and the treatments are resuming. The loss of weight continues, but not from the cancer, but from the now THRUSH inside his mouth and down the back of his throat from radiation. Doctors are speaking of a feeding tube. TEY pushes through the pain and eats soft foods daily, and special smoothies that his daughter fixes him. He has to get strong, he has to heal, he has to mend. He has to survive. He is a single parent fighting cancer. He should be taking care of his daughter not the other way around.
This fund raiser is being set up by his only sister, to try and get TEY some much relieved stress. It is hard enough fighting for his life, but the stress added of being the sole provider for him and his daughter is stress that WE might be able to help with. The goal is to give TEY a few months of no financial stress. Doctors are stating this can be a yr long process. Disablity has been filed by the State of Florida, but the process will take months. Can we help remove some of the stress of being the sole provider?
