Fundación Misión Gaia is a non-profit organization located in Minca,
a town within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta region of Columbia, a
place better known as “The Heart of the World”.
We host volunteers from around the globe, create after-school
programs, develop community workshops, organize animal clinics and
much, much more.
Why? Because we believe in building a better future for Minca.
We believe that responsible tourism, a thriving local economy, sound
environmental practices and healthy pet populations can be a reality
for our community.

More about the Sierra Nevada and why we´re here helping.
The Sierra Nevada region has a little bit of
everything. Water flows across the mountains in every direction, and
ends in majestic waterfalls. From the same spot you can see both snowy
peaks and the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. The enormous jungle
trees and mountain air are home to 635 types of birds including 36
species that can only be found here.
The extreme diversity of the Sierra Nevada region is what
attracted Misión Gaia to Minca in the first place. We wanted to be a
part of the community of people working to preserve this paradise. We
can already see some of the effects from our hard work over the course
of the last 3+ years. We see real change in the faces of children who
have been inspired to protect their beautiful home. We have found
satisfaction watching the70+ volunteers that we have hosted work with
community members and have once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. We know
that the region’s dogs and cats are able to live healthier, more
humane lives thanks to our animal health and welfare program, which
has reduced population growth of dogs in Taganga and Minca by at least 10,000.
With every success, we find a new challenge. The Sierra Nevada
de Santa Marta region is plagued with overcrowded schools,
insufficient opportunities, and high poverty rates. Tourism to the
region is rapidly growing more popular, and represents both a risk and
an opportunity. We are going to continue to implement programs that
protect the environment and increase the quality of life of people in
the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, but we need your help.
