For those of you that know us well, you will know that running does not come naturally to us. Drinking tea and coffee comes naturally, eating cake comes naturally but running does not. So it seems a crazy idea that in March 2014 we will be running the Hastings Half Marathon.
Our time spent in Ghana for 6 months in 2011 and a further month this summer has given us reason to throw our fears aside, and get our trainers on!
The community of Ahotokurom (Ahoto), meaning "Place of Serenity" was set up to provide practical support to leprosy sufferers and their families, with rehabilitation as the primary focus. This isn’t one of those charities where your money will be lost in administration – every penny goes towards paying to look after the children in their care, to run the special needs school, and to care for the elderly people that have suffered from leprosy.
OUR MISSION – To raise money for a project proposed within the special needs school we both worked in for 6 months. St Elizabeth’s Special Needs School provides support and hope for many children who struggle due to physical and mental handicaps, who are often overlooked in Ghanaian culture. The current vision in Ahoto is to build a centre in which the ‘training centre’ ( a group of boys and girls aged 15- 25) can develop their personal skills to enable them to live a relatively independent life. It will also provide an area in which to learn trades such as basket weaving, and chair weaving, which the boys and girls may then sell to create income.
This community is more than charity for us, it has become family and by donating, you are making a big difference to the lives of those we like to call our brothers and sisters. We are truly passionate about the work of Ahoto and we have seen with our own eyes how this community is changing so many lives in Ghana and therefore we want to give what we can. So please help support us with whatever you would like to give… A little can go a long way.
We’re going to follow a modest yet powerful Ghanaian moral: ‘What little we have – we want to share’.
