Green Receipt: Bringing Greater Transparency to Cannabis
Don't claim it. Measure it.
We let the evidence tell the history.
What if you could learn more about the cannabis product you purchased, beyond what is printed on its label?Cannabis consumers are presented with product names, THC and CBD percentages, batch numbers and, sometimes, certificates of analysis. But how easily can an ordinary consumer connect all that information to the actual product in their hands? How much do consumers really know about what they are purchasing? How accessible is the information? And how can we make that information easier to understand, document and compare? These are the questions behind Green Receipt.
The idea behind Green Receipt: Green Receipt is an independent cannabis transparency and evidence-documentation initiative being developed in Edmonton, Alberta. My goal is to create a practical system that connects a cannabis product's identifying information with documented observations, measurements and available laboratory documentation. Rather than asking consumers to simply accept claims, Green Receipt aims to give them another way to examine the information and evidence associated with their products.
The concept brings together several technologies and information sources, including:
- Product and packaging photography.
- Product identification and batch information.
- Access to available laboratory reports and certificates of analysis.
- Precision weighing and documented physical observations.
- Near-infrared measurement technology.
- Microscopic imaging and visual documentation.
- Individual digital evidence records.
The intention is to bring these pieces of information together in one accessible record. Green Receipt is not being developed as a replacement for accredited laboratory testing. It is designed to complement existing testing and documentation by making additional product-level observations and information more accessible.
Why does this matter?
Cannabis has become a regulated consumer product in Canada, but regulation alone does not mean every consumer understands the information available to them. Medical cannabis patients, recreational consumers and home growers all have different needs, but they share an interest in understanding what they are working with. For medical cannabis users, product selection can be particularly important. Cost, availability, convenience and product information can all influence purchasing decisions. For recreational consumers, understanding labels and available testing information can be equally important. For producers and retailers, better-connected product documentation could create opportunities to improve transparency and consumer communication. There is room to do better.
What is the first goal?
The immediate objective is to develop and validate the first Green Receipt Validation Station. This is the first major step toward demonstrating how the concept can work in practice. The proposed station combines specialized measurement equipment, imaging technology, sensors and a computer-based documentation system within a dedicated workstation.
The initial development work will focus on:
1. Completing the first station and integrating its equipment.
2. Developing the software and digital evidence-recording workflow.
3. Establishing consistent product imaging and measurement procedures.
4. Evaluating measurement repeatability and limitations.
5. Comparing appropriate measurements against independent laboratory results.
6. Establishing a foundation for a limited pilot and future partnerships.
The first station is not intended to make laboratory-level claims. Its purpose is to establish what can reliably be measured, what cannot, and where independent laboratory verification remains necessary.
How will Green Receipt work?
The vision is straightforward.
A product is documented, its identifying information is recorded, available supporting documentation is connected, and appropriate measurements and observations are collected. Each assessment will generate an individual Green Receipt identification record. Results will be communicated using a straightforward PASS, REVIEW or DECLINE framework, based on defined criteria and documented limitations.
The objective is not to declare an entire production batch safe, unsafe or compliant based on an individual sample. It is to build a traceable record that helps people better understand the information associated with the particular product being examined. Over time, these records could help establish a larger evidence base for understanding product characteristics, measurement differences and the relationship between available product information and documented observations.
What will the crowdfunding campaign support?
I am seeking to raise $120,000 CAD to advance the first major development milestone. The funds will support the work required to move Green Receipt from its development-stage concept toward a functioning, evaluated validation station and supporting documentation platform.
This includes:
- Specialized measurement and imaging equipment.
- Station construction and equipment integration.
- Computer hardware and software development.
- Digital recordkeeping and data infrastructure.
- Testing, calibration and independent comparison work.
- Initial operational development and pilot preparation.
The project will be developed in stages, with funding directed toward establishing the first practical demonstration of the concept. Any additional development and expansion will depend on results, available funding and suitable partnerships. Who is behind Green Receipt? My name is Jason Coughlin, and I am the person behind Green Receipt.
My involvement in cannabis education has given me an appreciation for how important accessible, understandable information can be. Through my educational work, including direct product-choice education and presentations involving community and health representatives, I have seen how much confusion can exist around cannabis products, terminology, testing and available information. I am not approaching this project as a laboratory or claiming to be a medical professional.
I am approaching it as a cannabis educator and independent project developer who believes that better documentation, better questions and accessible evidence can make a meaningful difference. Green Receipt is something I have been developing because I believe there is a genuine opportunity to improve how cannabis product information is connected, documented and understood.
Where could this lead?
The first station is only the beginning. If the initial development and validation work demonstrates that the approach is useful and sufficiently repeatable, future opportunities could include:
- Additional validation stations.
- Partnerships with independent analytical laboratories.
- Collaboration with cannabis retailers and licensed producers.
- Improved access to product documentation.
- Larger collections of documented product observations.
- Research opportunities involving product information and measurement comparisons.
These are development goals, not capabilities I am claiming are already operational. The long-term vision is to create a more connected approach to cannabis transparency, supported by documented evidence and appropriate independent verification.
Why your contribution matters
Building something new takes more than an idea. It takes equipment, development, testing, collaboration and the willingness to establish what works through evidence. Your contribution will help move Green Receipt toward its first practical development milestone.
Whether you are a cannabis consumer, medical patient, industry professional, researcher or simply someone who believes consumers deserve better access to information, I invite you to learn about this project and consider supporting its development. You are not simply contributing toward another cannabis business. You are helping explore a better way to connect product information with documented evidence.
