A FLICK, YOU SAY?

A monolingual man, constantly lost in translation in a globalized world, searches for the longest palindrome in a foreign language on his crossword puzzle one night as he is staying in a motel. He sees the shadow of a neighbor's hand, prompting him to get up and accidentally knock over an hourglass which breaks and spills sand everywhere.
“The Dragoman Looks for the Lost Girl" follows Bernardo, a man who is searching for much more than a foreign word in a crossword puzzle. In a hazy beach memory, the protagonist recalls holding the hand of Maria, a girl who drowned that same day that he formed a connection to her. He’s snapped to the present day, distracted by a large vacuum cleaner billboard. Strange events ensue; sand mysteriously continues to seep into all facets of his life, the hand shadow continues to reappear nightly, and the haunting vacuum advertisement infiltrates Bernardo’s consciousness when he least expects it. Eccentric characters appear, including a pair of offbeat twins, traveling nuns, a germaphobe boss, a coworker in a gorilla costume, and a curious boy who gives Bernardo a goldfish.
At his preposterous job, where he sells “microsecond loans,” Bernardo contacts a “Maria,” who he can only communicate with (in another language) through the use of automated phone translators. Their brief but touching connection is disrupted by the persistent vacuum ad on his computer screen. On his way home, Bernardo finds a store selling the vacuum and returns to his room to clean up the sand once and for all. Distracted once again by the appearance of a mysterious shadowed hand, Bernardo accidentally vacuums up his goldfish. The audience is left to wonder if Bernardo will connect with the neighboring shadow's hand, save his goldfish, and find the longest palindrome.
