My father is alone in a conflict zone.
Today he lives in the middle of a city shaken by bombardment and fear. For our family, every day brings the same painful question: Is he safe? Too often we cannot even reach him. The regime has repeatedly shut down internet access, and when the lines go silent, we are left imagining the worst.
What makes this situation even more heart-breaking is that my father is living with dementia. His memory fades more each year, and the world around him has become increasingly confusing and frightening. The people who once helped check in on him are no longer able to do so. Many have left, and others cannot safely reach him.
He now finds himself at a tragic crossroads — caught between war, memory loss, and deep loneliness, without family nearby to guide or protect him.
My father is not just someone in need of help today; he is someone who spent his life helping others.
He is a deeply kind and devoted father, and someone whose warm sense of humour has always held our family together. In his thirties, during another difficult chapter in our countries’ history, he travelled to the south of the country to serve as a nutritionist helping ensure the safety and quality of food for soldiers. At a time when many stayed away, he chose to go where he was needed.
This is now the second major war he has lived through in his lifetime.
Back then, he helped protect others. Today, he is the one who needs protection.
All of his three children now live in Canada, and we have long hoped he would eventually join us. Out of love for his homeland and hope that peace would return, he was always stubborn about leaving the country. But now the reality has become too dangerous. He is alone in a city that has become a zone of conflic, and his condition makes it impossible for him to navigate this crisis safely on his own.
Because of the current war situation, it is not safe for his family to travel back and the people who love him most cannot reach him when he needs us the most.
What stands between him and safety now is the complex task of arranging his safe journey from the zone of conflic to Toronto, where his children and family are ready to welcome him, care for him, and ensure he is never alone again.
While the family is able to cover the flight to Toronto, the fundraising will help us:
- Coordinate secure and reliable transportation out of a high-risk
area, beyond what a single family can cover
• Organize medical needs and trusted assistance to accompany him during travel because of his dementia
• Support his initial resettlement so he can safely reunite with his family and begin to recover in comfort
Our only goal is simple: to bring my father out of danger and into the arms of his family.
He spent his life helping others when they were in need. Now, at this vulnerable moment in his life, we are asking for help to bring him home.
Any support you can offer — whether through a donation or by sharing this campaign — means more to our family than words can express.
Thank you for helping us guide my father to safety.
Tina
