What is the Cape Town Project?

The Cape Town Project began in 2005. THUNK, Northwestern University's premiere co-ed a cappella group, has traveled to Cape Town six times since then, and we look forward to our seventh trip, coming this winter! While in South Africa, THUNK conducts music workshops at local schools, community centers and rehabilitation facilities. We also get the opportunity to perform at venues around the city, including the V&A Waterfront Amphitheater, local churches and more. In addition to holding workshops and playing gigs, THUNK members use their remaining time to explore the wonders of Cape Town. We visit landmarks such as Robbin Island, Table Mountain and Cape Point. At its core, the Cape Town Project serves to enrich the lives of those in the communities we visit as well as the lives of our members. We do that the best way we know how - though music.

Our mission!

THUNK members seek to form long-term relationships with organizations in Cape Town, and to have a lasting effect on the communities with which they interact. THUNK also hopes to expand musical horizons by performing with and for a diverse array of communities. While the Cape Town Project is primarily a service-learning trip, it is important for us, as students ourselves, to grow as individuals and musicians in our time abroad. By teaching, we learn.

What's new in 2016? 

In December of 2014, THUNK took its sixth trip to Cape Town. In addition to the workshops held at facilities such as schools, daycares, and a rehabilitation center in townships surrounding the city, THUNK performed at several concert venues to share our love of music with the South African community.

In 2016, we are planning more workshops than ever before. In past years we have done 3-5 workshops during the 9 day trip whereas this year we plan to do 6-7 workshops. This initiative is meant to keep the CTP mission alive and re-focus our trip on the values of service, music, and learning it was founded on.


Also, in past years financing has been a barrier of participation for some of our members. We hope that with your help all members of THUNK will be able to take part in the Cape Town experience and keep the tradition alive.

Above all, THUNK hopes to continue to inspire the children we work with to express themselves through art and music.
