What do you tell a soul that looks into your eyes and begs to live? Do you tell him that because he has FELV+ and FIV that he is not worthy? Do you tell him that hope is only for the "healthy" cats? Do you kiss him goodbye, wash your hands and walk away?
Or do you fight?
That was the choice we were given today. Daryl made the choice for us....he has lived on the streets for so long and fought so hard....he wants to live out his last days on a bed being loved. He deserves that.He is not ready to die. Anyone in rescue can tell you when one is ready....but Daryl...he was begging for a chance.
He weighs 4 pounds, has a URI, and has Felv+ and FIV. Now most people may think we are crazy for not allowing him to cross....but it was not our choice...it was Daryl's. He did not get to choose to be unvaccinated and get these horrible diseases. He did not choose to be thrown out as a stray to starve. But one look into his eyes...and you know...he choose to live today.
He will need our help. We had a full blood panel ran to see where he stood. Thankfully, it came back very good with no organ failure. But he has a URI and will need medication for it, fluids and quality food. He is spending the night at the vet's and tomorrow. his hospice caregiver will pick him up for his next journey.
His vet bill today is around $350 and $90 was called in. I have set the fundraiser at $300 to also cover quality food for him.
Please help us give Daryl the best hospice care we can. We cannot change his ulitmate outcome, but we can help make the journey a joyous time. Be it one week or one year, we are letting Daryl tell us when it is time for his Rainbow Crossing.
