Hello, my name is Debbie Elsey and on May 6, 2013, I was diagnosed
with stage 3 breast cancer. Recently I was blessed with a 10-Day
Scholarship Program to receive treatment in Atlanta, GA this coming
October 2013. The scholarship, however, does not cover therapies, room
and board, transportation, and other expenses that would be incurred
during the visit and the reason for the fundraiser(s).
Due to several life changing events over the past three years, I
am not able to take on the additional expenses for the trip. These
life changing events have significantly affected me financially. In
2011, I lost my job and my medical insurance and was unemployed for 18
months. In 2012, I lost my house and most of my personal belongings.
In January 2013, things started turning around as I was hired by
a local car dealership. Three months later I was told by a friend
about a job opportunity with a government contractor. I interviewed
and was offered the position. I accepted.
On the evening after my first day at my new job, I had a
follow-up doctors appointment in which I received my breast cancer
diagnosis. I discovered my medical insurance with my new employer was
not effective until July 1, 2013. My new insurance company considered
my breast cancer to a “pre-existing condition,” and said I would not
be covered for one year.
Through all of this, I do my best to keep a positive attitude
and grateful spirit. I am extremely blessed to have such loving and
amazing family and friends who have loved me, listened to me, cried
with me, prayed for me, hugged me, and totally supported me. Thank you !!
I am also very grateful for my friends, who over the next 3-4
weeks will be assisting me with a few fundraisers to help raise money
for my trip!
