The Armstrong Destination Imagination Clever Cupcakes team is travelling to Knoxville, Tennessee to participate in the DI Global Finals tournament! The Clever Cupcakes, a group of seven Grade 4 students, recently showcased incredible problem-solving and creative thinking skills at the B.C. Provincial DI Tournament in April. After winning first place in their category at the Regionals in March, their hard work and dedication continued to pay off as they were named B.C.’s 2nd Place Provincial Champion in their challenge division. Their success has earned these Grade 4 kids a place at the DI Global Tournament to be held at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, May 23-27, 2012! In Tennessee, the Clever Cupcakes will have the opportunity to compete with teams from the US, Canada and 10 other countries. Amazing!

Now the new challenge is raising money to help the Clever Cupcakes on their journey to Tennessee. We are hoping to raise $4500 – the cost of the DI registration for the 7 children who make up the Clever Cupcakes group. We are embarking on other fundraising efforts to help cover the $5000 airfare and other tournament costs for the kids. We would appreciate your support in the fundraising efforts – any little amount helps! Thank you for your support.

DI is the world's largest problem-solving program for children. The DI organization’s mission is to develop opportunities that inspire a global community of learners to use diverse approaches in applying 21st Century skills and creativity. DI teaches the creative process from imagination to innovation. Since 1999, this program has encouraged children to be critical and creative thinkers, take risks, build team work, collaboratively problem-solve, research and orally present projects, and have fun, all while incorporating science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and the arts. These are skills that they will use to make a difference in their communities, places of employment, and with their families for the rest of their lives.

In the tournaments, the Clever Cupcakes took part in a Team Challenge, in which they had to present a team-created story about a character that uses a disguise, using only non-verbal theatrical techniques to present the story. As well, they had to design and construct at least two masks that enhanced the story. The kids also competed in an Instant Challenge, in which teams need to think on their feet and engage in quick, creative thinking and problem-solving to come up with a performance or task-based solution to a problem in a period of just five to eight minutes.
