As you have no doubt heard by now, on October 29th, Hurricane Sandy slammed into the Eastern Coastline of the United States, resulting in one of the largest natural disasters in U.S. history. In the end, 110 have lost their lives, while 40,000 people in New York, along with thousands of others in New Jersey, are currently without homes. It’s been reported that early estimates of the damages sustained by the storm in both states combined could reach as high as 20 billion dollars.

For the past few days, I, along with many others, have been volunteering to help out with the relief effort in and around New York City. The whole experience has made a couple of things very clear to me. First, it’s going to be a long time before life in those areas hit hardest by the storm will return to normal. Most likely, with the oncoming winter, things are going to get a whole lot worse before they get better. In fact, the first winter storm is schedule to hit New York some time later this afternoon. Second, any aid that has been provided so far is simply not enough. It’s been reported in some areas local resources have already been exhausted to where they are now completely dependent on outside assistance.

Since the storm hit, I’ve received a number emails and IM’s from Zouk dancers all around the world, expressing their concern and asking what they can do to help during this difficult time. As a result, I’ve gone ahead and created the Zouk Nation Hurricane Sandy Disaster Relief Fund (HSDRF).

When asking someone to donate money to a cause, I think it’s only fair to explain what that money will be used for. In this case, it will be used to purchase those items the relief effort is currently running low on, including, tools needed for the clean up, -such as work gloves, batteries, flashlights, face masks, shovels and brooms- along with the things people need just in order to survive –food, water, blankets, and medicine, to name a few.

Please keep in mind, it doesn’t take a lot to make a difference. Just $5 can buy a case of water (24, 16 oz bottles), another $20 a shovel or a broom. In short, no contribution is too small. After you’ve made a donation, please, don’t stop there. Tell all your fellow dancers and anyone else who you think might be interested in making a donation. I can not stress enough how important this is.

To anyone who would like to make a donation there are two ways you can go about doing it.

1. By using this account we've created on Fundrazor.com.
(Note: At this time, Fundrazr.com can only receive donations following countries: Canada. United States, Australia, New Zealand, United Kingdom, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland,France, Germany, Italy, Ireland, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland)

2. By going to the Zouk Nation Blog where you will find a Donate button that will take you directly to the group’s PayPal account where you can make a donation.
