On May 6th a four-alarm fire blazed through two different apartment buildings in the Mission Neighborhood of San Francisco. One of the children affected by the fire was one of my own beloved third graders. He and his family, headed by a hard working, single-mom, has been struggling to find stable, long-term housing. The recent affordable housing shortage has left them with few options. Gentrification is slowly but surely pushing our low-income families out of our vibrant, historically Latino neighborhood. The Red Cross has temporarily placed the family on Treasure Island until mid-September. Please help us get the family back home to the Mission neighborhood during the projected 1-1.5 yr. period it will take to renovate the apartment that burnt down. Any financial contribution makes a difference! This article chronicles my student and his family's story: http://missionlocal.org/2012/06/life-after-a-fire/ This article chronicles my student and his family's story: http://missionlocal.org/2012/06/life-after-a-fire/
