My mom has spent her entire life putting everyone else before herself. She's the kind of person who would give her last dollar to someone in need, never ask for help, and always find a way to keep going no matter what life threw at her. Today, she's facing the biggest battle of her life, and now we're the ones asking for help on her behalf.
Despite never smoking a single day in her life, my mom has been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer that has spread to her brain. Watching someone you love go through this is heartbreaking, and the emotional, physical, and financial burden has been overwhelming.
Her journey began after one of the worst days imaginable. On September 18, 2019, she lost her spouse to oral cancer. Later that same day, she was involved in a serious car accident. While doctors were treating her injuries, they discovered a nodule in her left lung. After months of scans, tests, and a biopsy, she received the devastating news that it was lung cancer.
She underwent surgery to remove part of her lung, hoping that would be the end of her fight. Instead, doctors found cancer in one of her lymph nodes. Since then, she's endured painful infections, fluid around her heart, countless hospital visits, endless scans, difficult treatments, and the exhausting side effects of medication.
Now, the cancer has spread to her brain and returned near her heart. She will soon begin radiation treatments while continuing targeted therapy. Although she has health insurance, it doesn't cover all of her treatments, surgeries, medications, or specialized care. On top of that, she's responsible for co-pays for nearly every appointment, scan, and procedure. Those expenses continue to pile up, creating a financial burden no family should have to face while fighting cancer.
The last thing my mom should have to worry about while fighting for her life is how she's going to afford the care she desperately needs. She deserves to focus all of her strength on healing.
