Fatim Bhimani hasn't added a story.
We visited three families in particular. The first family's living conditions were by far the worst we observed. The family consisted of an elderly mother, her young daughter, and her three young grandchildren. Their home had no floor, and due to heavy rains, it had completely turned to mud, through which the children were running through with no shoes. The roof was made of large sheets of metal and garbage. Tires were placed on top of the sheets to try and keep the rain out and patch up any holes. The bathroom, which had no door, no flooring, and no drainage, was essentially just mud. They had no water heater, making cooking and bathing in the winter months just about impossible. Currently, they are in need of the following items to allow them a basic standard of living:
A proper roof ($500)
Stove ($40)
A basic tiled floor ($500)
A water heater ($15)
Carpet for the inside living area
A proper bathroom ($500-$700)
A sewing machine, so the mother and daughter can use it to sustain themselves
The second family had a water heater, but their connection was cut as they were unable to pay the landlord the required $80. They were under the impression that their fridge was working, which we discovered that it was not. They had a small kitchen and battered stove. The family's main priority was to find their son, about 16 years old, a way to work and provide for them financially. This can be done through the provision of a type of small motorbike, which he would be able to use to make deliveries, as well as seek work beyond their local areas. This family needs the following to improve their standard of living:
Fridge ($250)
Motorbike ($1500)
Stove ($40)
Washing machine ($200)
Money to reconnect the water heater ( $80)
Bread machine ($25)
When we walked into the final home, we were hit immediately with the smell of kerosene. While the family had an indoor heater, it ran on oil, and these fumes were being breathed in by the entire family. The father, unsurprisingly, has been diagnosed with cancer, yet still provides for his family by cooking large pots of 'dal'- lentil curry- to be sold. Medications are not subsidized by any kind of government programs in Iraq, and thus, the family is unable to afford his chemotherapy treatment. Should he progress to the point that he is unable to work, the family will be left without any source of income. They have requested the following items for their home:
Carpet
A large stove for the father's cooking ($40)
Repair of a rotting wall
Kitchen cupboard
Electric heater ($25)
Window repair ($20)
Funding for chemo medications
We made promises to these three families that we would do whatever we could to help them. We are asking for your assistance in reaching this goal. To supply all of the listed items, we need a total of about $6,000. Small amounts can go a long way towards improving the quality of life of the women, men, and children living in the aftermath of corrupt leaders, political unrest, and most recently ISIS. As the work is being completed, the organization we are working with, will be sending us pictures, so that we can follow the progress as well as receipts of the items purchased. We will be sure to share these with you.
