Shari Donohue-Smith hasn't added a story.
I will continuing updating everyone as more details emerge. Here is a little bit of her story:
I have known Robin Harris Hunsicker since we were kids. She grew up in center city Allentown a block away from me. As we grew and attended the same schools, lived the same lives of debauchery then both married and became mothers, we remained great friends. Oh the stories we can tell you!!! We have held each other up threw many a family members tragedies and deaths. Little did I realize that our journeys hadn't compared to anything, until now.
On 8/18 while I was doing some paperwork for my students, I received a phone call but I missed it. It was Robin, she left a voice message. I listened intently as she told me, she was sick. She has cancer. I stopped breathing, sitting there in shock. I struggled on how to call her back. I could hear the fear and despair in her voice, how was I, her friend of all these years, going to help her when I couldn't even catch my own breathe. Why was I going to say? I went to bed that night without calling her. I slept less than 3 hours. I woke in the morning and by 7:30 am I had called her. She called me back in the afternoon, we played phone tag, then finally got to talking....
August 6th, while working at a job she's done her entire life, that being a nurses aid, Robin was lifting and transferring a patient. The patient rolled in just the right way that they fell against Robin, hurting her breast. Robin immediately felt a pain that wasn't like a normal pain so she reached up and that was when she noticed a mass there, about the size of a golfball. Something she hadn't noticed before.
Robin had yearly mammograms that were always normal. Even comparing with last years mammogram, there was nothing there. However, her family history is wrought with Cancer. She sought treatment with her family doctor. The results took longer than normal and when trying to get them she was given the run around "you really should come in", "the doctor isn't in right now", etc. She KNEW something wasn't right. Finally, someone was understanding and empathetic enough to realize that this news needed to be given. Robin was informed that she indeed did have cancer. With her heavily affected family history and the fact that this mass had now almost doubled in size, the decision was made to remove not one but both breasts, as well as both ovaries.
Robin recently filed for FMLA with her employer so there goes her wages, there also goes her insurance. She has applied for disability as well, which will then give her SOME income and SOME insurance via the government. However, this will be minimal compared to what she made. Robin has a daughter, Tori, that is in her 20's. Robin is engaged, and living in Macungie. Medically, she just had her port placed to receive her chemo treatments, which should begin August 27th. She's asked me to come with her. Said along with finding out about the cancer, this is going to be the 2nd hardest day in her life. And she wants me there.
