I'm hoping my story will inspire and make a difference in someone's life!

I was born with Cerebral Palsy and have been confined to a wheelchair; unable to do most things without help since i can remember.

Having Cerebral Palsy is quite challenging. For the first twenty-five years of my life, I have been dependant on others; as I start my day, throughout the day and as the day meets its’ end. I watched others complain about the little amount of independency they had; while I hadn’t any. I could only dream of where I would have been had I any.

Little did I know, that the fragile self-belief and confidence I carried with me, would one day, lead me to the opportunity at a future I had only every dreamt of. With the help of a qualified and highly experienced individual in a controlled environment; with the right program and assistance, my previously impossible-for-the-first-twenty-five-years-of-my-life-goal was starting to become reality.

Due to the last year and a half of specialised training, for the first time in my life; I am able to:

-> Eat most foods independently; fruits, sandwiches and snacks. In some cases, at certain times, I am able to use a fork and spoon while consuming semi-solid food e.g. jelly, porridge etc

-> Drink from juice boxes and water bottles without worrying about spillage because of involuntary movements and spasms occurring.

-> Dress myself - Upper body – it’s a slow process but with practice it is taking less time (up to five minutes – before, twenty seconds – present) - Lower-body – work in progress.

-> Walking short distances with support. No longer require my father to lift me from point A to point B all the time. My mother and younger sisters (twenty and fourteen years of age) can assist me to stand and transfer in and out of the wheelchair, bed and couch.

-> Get in and out of the wheelchair; off the ground by myself (slowly increasing effectiveness with time).

-> Use my right arm, as opposed to previously, wherein I was unable to do so as it was constantly taut and stiff.

-> Since beginning personal training my speech has improved visibly. I am now speaking a lot more clearly, confidently and without hesitation. This is mainly due to the fact that I have been training; and as a result, others and myself have noted the reduction of muscle spasms, involuntary movements, and my improved fine motor skills. These changes in turn allow my body to relax.

Additionally pain has unfortunately been a constant in my life. Since the age of twelve, it has been necessary for me to have 20 to 30 botox injections in all four limbs to help increase mobility and decrease the pain involved with the multiple muscle spasms that occurred every few minutes.

Since I commenced training, I no longer require these injections nor do I have any pain. My muscle spasms are limited and are far and few between. When they do occur, they aren’t as intense and long-lasting. Over the past four months I have improved over 500% and continue to improve on a daily basis.

Exercising has given me the life I never had; the life which I wished to have.

I am now able to enjoy my hobbies, focus on work and concentrate on my future endeavours. Additionally, it is allowing me to pursue my life-long dream of owning a business as a web designer and advancing further in sport; giving me a greater opportunity to fulfil my aspirations and to go that one step further and finally represent my country.

Thank god, I am now able to do a lot of the little things that people take for granted with limited help and have recently been able to walk/stand with assistance for the first time.

However, I have been unable to continue due to the high cost of a specialised personal trainer; therefore I am currently looking for potential sponsors or people who may consider assisting me with cost and to also be a part of my progress in the future.
