Make school a better place

Since January, I have been living in Monrovia, the capital of Liberia. Life here is loud and chaotic, and in the countryside poverty is everywhere. The scars of two civil wars and the Ebola pandemic are still visible: corruption, unemployment, drug problems, illiteracy, and weak infrastructure weigh heavily on the people.

And yet — despite these challenges, the children and young people shine with joy, energy, and a deep will to learn. They dream of a better future.

But many teachers are not well trained. Corporal punishment and even cases of sexual abuse still occur in schools. This is why I have taken on the responsibility of training teachers in 27 schools across Liberia. Over the next three years, more than 800 teachers will benefit. Together, we want to end violence in schools and instead create safe and respectful spaces where children can grow and thrive.

To make this possible, I am working closely with 84 especially committed teachers who take part in intensive workshops. They will act as multipliers, passing on what they learn to their colleagues. This way, the knowledge spreads widely and sustainably.

One big challenge: many teachers here don’t have smartphones. But smartphones are essential for communication, knowledge-sharing, and ongoing support. They allow me to stay in touch between workshops, provide materials, and accompany teachers in their daily school life. Without them, valuable learning is easily lost.
