Ann Adams hasn't added a story.
Caroline Adams, a recent graduate from UMass Amherst and BU Goldman School of Dentistry, had a tragic sledding accident in January that left her paralyzed from the waist down. She has been working very hard at making a new life with the challenges of paralysis.
On August 22nd, Caroline will have the LION procedure (Laparoscopic Implantation of Neurotransmitter) which sends electrical stimulation to the leg nerves. The procedure evolved from the experiences of Dr. Marc Possover in Zurich, Switzerland and has resulted in over 70% of patients regaining ability to walk, 80% can stand and 92% regain feeling in their legs.
This procedure has changed people’s lives physically, mentally and emotionally. Just being able to stand and look someone in the eye, or walk to the bathroom, kitchen, or outside dramatically improves quality of life and mental health; it also helps the bones, muscles, digestive and other systems in the body function properly.
Dr. Possover has shared videos about the LION procedure here: https://bit.ly/3OJjbLw
If you can’t access the video, here is an older video about the procedure: https://bit.ly/3IelyDZ
Since this procedure is still considered experimental, there is no coverage of the cost from insurance. The costs of the surgery is as follows: Initial intake assessment $2,000, surgery $32,000, neurotransmitter $54,000, air & ground transportation $9,000, lodging $4,000. There will be many months of intense physical therapy following the surgery expected to cost ~ $1000/ month. But what is the value of being ambulatory? What is hope worth? The benefits to Caroline’s physical and mental health are priceless and we need your help to make this dream come true.
Caroline and her husband Chris are determined to strive for all the functionality that technology and modern medicine can get her. Thank you in advance for anything you can contribute to our mission to get Caroline walking again. As a pioneer in undertaking this groundbreaking procedure, this will give hope to other spinal cord injury patients around the world.
